Tokyo authorities announced on Friday that a Canadian citizen has been apprehended under allegations of smuggling a significant quantity of methamphetamine into Japan. The illicit substance was allegedly concealed within large industrial equipment sent in a shipping container from the United States.
The Tokyo metropolitan police reported the arrest of 38-year-old Vincent Yat Sum Yeung, who is a company executive and resides in Yokohama, close to Tokyo. His arrest took place on Wednesday.
Authorities suspect that Yeung may have operated with unidentified accomplices, and they are actively pursuing further investigations. However, they have refrained from disclosing additional details at this time.
Reports indicated that approximately 320 kilograms (or 705 pounds) of meth were discovered during an inspection. This substantial amount was separated into 321 individual bags, each containing one kilogram of the drug, hidden within a large milling machine that had been shipped from Los Angeles back in December 2023, as reported by NHK public television.
The estimated street value of the seized methamphetamine is around 21.2 billion yen, which equates to approximately $137 million. Following the shipping process, both the industrial machine and the drugs were temporarily stored at a warehouse located in Kuki, a city north of Tokyo, as noted by NHK.
