THESSALONIKI, Greece — Authorities in Greece have apprehended a Turkish national after a medical emergency led to the discovery of numerous weapons aboard his drifting boat, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when the coast guard was alerted to a motorized vessel floating aimlessly near the port of Alexandroupolis, which is located close to the Greek-Turkish border. Upon investigation, coast guard personnel found a staggering 61 firearms onboard. These included a variety of handguns, pistols, and automatic rifles, along with silencers and approximately 3,000 rounds of ammunition, some classified as military-grade.
The 55-year-old suspect is currently receiving medical attention while under police supervision, following his arrest. He faces multiple charges, including illegal importation, smuggling, and possession of weapons and ammunition, with authorities suspecting intentions to distribute them for illicit activities.
Furthermore, the vessel has been confiscated and is now on land for further examination by Greek law enforcement officials.
