BERLIN — Tobias Eder, a member of the German national hockey team during the previous year’s world championships, has passed away after his battle with cancer, as announced by his club on Wednesday. He was just 26 years old.

The Eisbaeren Berlin organization revealed that Eder had been diagnosed with a malignant tumor in August and ultimately “succumbed to complications from cancer.” The news has left the team and its fans in deep sorrow.

“We are shocked, deeply saddened and stunned,” the club shared in a post on Instagram. “Unfortunately, Tobi did not win his hardest fight. It is impossible to find the right words now.” The news of his passing has resonated across social media, with Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl sharing a photo of Eder along with the heartfelt tribute: “Rest in peace, Toni.”

During the last world championships, Eder participated in three games for the German team, notably scoring one goal against Slovakia in a triumphant 6-4 victory.

In a statement, the German hockey federation expressed their condolences: “We remember the many funny, beautiful and special moments that we were able to experience with Tobi and say goodbye with great gratitude for the time we spent together.” They also extended their sympathies to Eder’s family, fiancée, friends, and teammates, offering their complete support during this incredibly challenging time.
