Shooting at Connecticut apartment complex leaves one dead and two officers injured during drug investigation

Connecticut law enforcement officials were involved in a fatal incident on Wednesday morning during an attempt to execute a drug-related search warrant in New Haven. The confrontation resulted in the death of a suspect, with two police officers sustaining injuries during the encounter, according to police reports.

The injured officers, both from West Haven, suffered leg injuries but were later treated and released from a local hospital. Fortunately, three residents inside the apartment, including an 8-year-old girl, escaped unharmed.

Footage from news broadcasts showed an area of the apartment complex that had suffered damage, notably with shattered windows and the location marked off with yellow crime scene tape.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., a task force made up of local officers and federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration was attempting to enforce a search warrant for drugs when the 35-year-old male suspect, who had a known criminal history, opened fire. New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson confirmed that the man had prior interactions with law enforcement.

“This was a protracted incident,” Chief Jacobson remarked during a news conference later in the day. “It involved not just gunfire but also a barricaded situation where there were delays before further shots occurred. It was evident that this individual was unwilling to cooperate peacefully. Attempts to negotiate with him failed.”

In addition to the suspect, the apartment housed the girl and a 32-year-old woman, along with her 52-year-old father. Authorities indicated a personal connection existed between the deceased suspect and the woman.

“The bravery exhibited by the officers during this chaotic scene was commendable, as they managed to escort the grandfather and the young girl to safety,” the police chief explained. “It is regrettable that the suspect did not survive, especially after officers had tried to engage him.”

The identities of the officers involved and the deceased suspect have not been disclosed. The specifics of the search warrant remain undisclosed as the investigation into the shooting is being carried out by the state inspector general’s office, which is expected to provide updates soon.

Mayor Justin Elicker of New Haven expressed concern for the mental well-being of the young girl and her grandfather, stating that he and Chief Jacobson had reached out to them to offer support services, including mental health counseling.

“It’s unimaginable what they went through during that ordeal, and I am relieved they are unharmed,” Mayor Elicker stated.

He further emphasized that this incident highlights the inherent risks faced by law enforcement as they work to keep the community safe and to hold those who pose significant threats accountable for their actions.
