GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A woman from western Michigan faces serious allegations for allegedly igniting a house fire that resulted in the tragic death of her 12-year-old daughter, who was unable to escape from her bedroom.
According to Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom, the incident represents an unfathomably cruel act by a mother against her own children. The young victim, Shamiya Stewart, passed away two nights following the blaze, while her two siblings, aged 7 and 10, fortunately managed to survive the harrowing event.
The investigation revealed that the 46-year-old mother, Roconda Singleton, had removed seven smoke detectors from the home prior to the fire and had used lighter fluid to ignite the flames. Witnesses reported that she was outside when law enforcement officials arrived at the scene. Fire Chief Brad Brown expressed the emotional impact of the incident, stating that the cries heard from inside the house “will live on in our heads for the rest of our lives.”
Singleton was taken into custody and appeared in court, where she faces charges of arson and child abuse. As of now, she does not have legal representation, but a judge entered a plea of not guilty on her behalf. Prosecutors indicated that additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
In a court document, police reported that Singleton confessed to her involvement in the fire. According to prosecutor Chris Becker, her mental health issues likely played a role in this tragic situation. Court records indicate she had been placed in a treatment facility earlier in 2024.
Lyn Stewart, Shamiya’s father, shared his sorrow in a statement to the media, asking for prayers for the family amidst this difficult time. He expressed his deep emotional struggle, urging the community to keep them in their thoughts.
