EDMONTON, Alberta — In a captivating match on Monday night, the Edmonton Oilers emerged victorious over the Seattle Kraken with a 4-2 score, marking their third consecutive win. Connor McDavid and Corey Perry made significant contributions in the second period, while Mattias Ekholm registered a goal and an assist, alongside Mattias Janmark, who also found the net for Edmonton. With this victory, the Oilers have now triumphed in 11 of their last 14 games, reclaiming the top spot in the Pacific Division, just one point ahead of the idle Vegas Golden Knights. Calvin Pickard showcased his skills by making 26 saves throughout the game.
The Kraken initially took the lead with goals from Eeli Tolvanen and Vince Dunn, leading 2-1 at the end of the first period. However, the team has faced defeat in two of their last three games, despite Joey Daccord’s commendable performance, where he stopped 27 shots.
After returning from a three-game suspension for a cross-checking incident involving the Vancouver Canucks’ Conor Garland, McDavid tied the game at 2-2, just under two minutes into the second period. Perry then followed up with a goal at 9:38, allowing the Oilers to take the lead. Ekholm capped off the night with an empty-netter secured with only 58 seconds left on the clock.
Notably, Jared McCann, Seattle’s top scorer, was kept off the score sheet after having amassed five points in his prior four games. His drought extends to 15 games since he last scored against a goalie on December 22 against Colorado.
The Oilers found their equalizer with 5:33 left in the first when Connor Brown’s angled shot from the boards deflected off on Janmark, sneaking past Daccord. This marked only Janmark’s second goal of the year — the first being an empty-netter from 39 games prior — and his initial point since December 22.
A pivotal moment occurred midway through the second period when Darnell Nurse executed a remarkable pass from his own goal line, leading Perry to an unopposed goal at the Kraken’s blue line, enhancing the Oilers’ lead to 3-2. This victory further solidified Edmonton’s historical dominance over Seattle, as they now hold an impressive 11-2 record against them, including eight consecutive wins with a noteworthy combined score of 55-33 in those encounters.
Looking ahead, the Kraken will host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, while the Oilers are set to welcome the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
