CHICAGO — White Sox General Manager Chris Getz discussed the promising talent within the organization and encouraged fans to maintain their patience as the team works toward a brighter future.
While acknowledging the immense frustration among supporters due to last season’s performance, which set a modern major league record for losses, Getz remains hopeful.
“Looking ahead, there are identifiable long-term assets that could contribute to a highly competitive team,” he stated on Thursday. “Watching these players progress and establish themselves as effective major leaguers this year is something to be excited about. Ultimately, progress needs to occur, and I trust our fans will realize that the commitment and discipline we are embracing will yield benefits down the road.”
Getz spoke with the press prior to a more intimate fan festival, which is being held at a local theater near the South Side ballpark, a departure from the usual larger venue downtown. This gathering provides fans with an opportunity to engage with the front office as well as current and former players and coaches.
Last season, the White Sox struggled immensely, finishing with a record of 41-121 during Getz’s first complete season leading the team’s baseball operations.
“We expect our players to grow, both individually and collectively,” Getz remarked. “Sometimes improvement will be reflected in wins, while at other times it might manifest in losses. It’s crucial to recognize what each player needs to thrive at the major league level, and it’s also about learning to work cohesively to secure victories.”
New leadership is now present in the dugout, as manager Will Venable takes over from Pedro Grifol, who was let go in August. Venable previously served as an associate manager alongside Bruce Bochy in Texas over the past two years, where he managed daily operations and outfield training for a Rangers team that triumphed in the 2023 World Series.
“Our focus will be on effort and competitiveness from Day 1. We hold high expectations and accountability for this, and we hope this mindset becomes synonymous with who we are as the White Sox,” Venable expressed.
The team is optimistic about the development of talented left-handers Noah Schultz and Hagen Smith, both of whom will participate in major league camp during spring training before returning to the minor leagues. Getz also mentioned that shortstop Colson Montgomery, selected 22nd overall in the 2021 draft, is anticipated to make his debut this season.
At the recent winter meetings, Chicago made a significant trade, sending All-Star lefty Garrett Crochet to Boston, but slugger Luis Robert Jr. will remain with the White Sox.
“We’re keeping an open mind and are not actively looking to trade anyone,” Getz said. “That said, we are aware that other teams are exploring the free agent market. There may be chances for dialogue, but we believe most of our major moves have already been executed. I’m eager to bring this group together out in Arizona.”
