LONDON — At the upcoming Paris Olympics, boxer Cindy Ngamba has made history by becoming the first athlete competing under refugee status to win a medal.
The 26-year-old middleweight is now eager to transition into the professional boxing scene.
Ngamba is set to have her professional debut on March 7 in London, participating in an all-female event that features a prominent welterweight unification match between Lauren Price and Natasha Jonas at the Royal Albert Hall.
“As a boxer and fighter, aiming for high goals is essential,” Ngamba stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
“I aspire to face some of the most experienced female boxers and pursue as many world titles as I can.”
Details regarding Ngamba’s opponent have not been disclosed yet.
Ngamba hails from Cameroon, where she secured a bronze medal last summer as part of the Refugee Olympic Team.
She relocated to the UK at the age of 11 and explained that her refugee status was granted in 2021 due to the threat of imprisonment she faced in Cameroon because of her sexual orientation.
