Josh Allen moves forward as Lamar Jackson exits, facing the weight of another postseason defeat

Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen faced off in a high-stakes playoff matchup, but only one would advance. Allen’s Buffalo Bills played a sharper game, defeating Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens 27-25, earning the right to challenge Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship.

Turnovers proved critical in both divisional playoff games held on Sunday. The Bills notably took care of the ball, committing no turnovers, whereas Jackson and the Ravens had critical giveaways that ultimately affected the outcome. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles also avoided turnovers in their close 28-22 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Allen was effective throughout the game, rushing for two touchdowns and making smart decisions despite challenging winter weather. Conversely, Jackson had his first game of the season marred by multiple turnovers, including an interception and a fumble. On top of that, tight end Mark Andrews dropped a crucial two-point conversion attempt late in the game and suffered a fumble that directly led to a field goal for the Bills.

With this latest loss, Jackson shoulders the weight of being unable to secure victory in such a vital matchup. Despite being a two-time MVP and a favorite to gain the honor once more this season, the Ravens have not made it to the Super Bowl during his tenure, even with two previous No. 1 seed finishes in the AFC.

While Jackson posted impressive individual stats this season, including over 4,172 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and a passer rating of 119.6, the Ravens were ultimately the third seed and faced disadvantages such as having to play away against the Bills. After defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round, they faltered on a treacherous field that severely hampered their efforts.

“Turnovers are not something we can afford,” Jackson remarked. “That’s why we ended up losing, as we were moving the ball effectively. It’s frustrating. I’m just tired of it.”

Earlier in the day, the Eagles emerged victorious against the Rams. Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley led Philadelphia to their win, which was punctuated by Barkley’s remarkable 205 rushing yards and two long touchdown runs of 62 and 78 yards. However, the Eagles’ defense sealed the game when linebacker Jalen Carter made crucial plays on the Rams’ final offensive drive, including a sack of Matthew Stafford.

The Rams, much like the Ravens, struggled with turnovers. Both Stafford and Kyren Williams lost fumbles in the second half that directly led to field goals for the Eagles. A botched handoff between Stafford and Williams also resulted in a significant loss on a crucial drive.

“There were some uncharacteristic mistakes regarding ball handling today,” said Rams coach Sean McVay. “Those turnovers were not something we’d usually see in different conditions.”

The adverse winter weather presented more of a challenge for the Rams compared to the other teams, impacting their performance. Stafford acknowledged the unique difficulties posed by the conditions but expressed determination despite the setbacks.

Furthermore, the loss in the conference championship left distinct feelings for the Rams when compared to the Ravens. As underdogs, the Rams had already defied expectations by reaching this point in the playoffs, riding the momentum of a significant wild-card victory against the Minnesota Vikings. Unlike Jackson, both Stafford and McVay have the satisfaction of having previously won a Super Bowl together.

In contrast, the loss weighs heavier on Jackson, who still seeks that elusive Lombardi trophy to anchor his legacy. As both quarterbacks strive for their first championship ring, each defeat amplifies the existing narratives surrounding their careers.

Now, Allen and the Bills shift their focus to Mahomes and the Chiefs. The Bills have faced Kansas City three times in recent playoff outings, including the AFC title game in January 2021.

“There’s a strong sense of pride in this locker room,” Allen stated. “We don’t pay attention to outside opinions. Our team continues to work hard and remains motivated.”

In this playoff journey, Allen moves forward while Jackson faces another offseason of disappointment. The conversation surrounding both quarterbacks will persist until they can both claim a championship title, if that moment ever arrives.
