DALLAS — In an impressive performance, Jason Robertson contributed significantly to the Dallas Stars’ 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday night, adding a goal early on in the first period and providing an assist in the third. Goaltender Jake Oettinger showcased his skills by making 33 saves during the match, helping the Stars secure their tenth win in their last fourteen outings.
Alongside Robertson’s goal, Wyatt Johnston and rookies Matej Blumel and Mavrik Bourque found the back of the net, solidifying a strong offensive display from Dallas. Although Simon Edvinsson managed to cut Detroit’s deficit to 3-1 with just under eight minutes remaining in the game, Johnston quickly restored the three-goal lead with another tally just over two minutes later, set up by Robertson.
Notably, Robertson had been on a notable scoring streak, having netted two goals within a span of 40 seconds in the Stars’ prior game, a 6-3 loss against Colorado. His power-play goal during this matchup was particularly significant, considering that the Stars were struggling with the league’s least effective home power-play unit prior to this game.
Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon managed to stop 21 shots but could not prevent his team from another defeat, having also suffered a loss against Tampa Bay the day before. Meanwhile, Robertson’s season performance remains remarkable, recording a five-game scoring streak, totaling 29 points over the course of 24 games, and eight goals in the last 13 games. Matt Duchene also made an impact with two assists, bringing his season total to a team-leading 45 points, with seven of those coming in the last four games.
The Red Wings have struggled recently, losing three of their last four games. Their strong start after the coaching change with Todd McLellan has since been marred by these losses. Lyon made an appearance during the third period of the previous night’s game, stepping in for Cam Talbot, marking his first time on consecutive nights since March 2023.
On the Stars’ side, Oettinger has been on a roll, winning seven out of his last eight starts, boasting 23 wins overall, which places him second in the league. The Stars have dominated the Red Wings in their last eight matchups, with the streak beginning in April 2021.
A pivotal moment occurred when Johnston thwarted Moritz Seider’s attempt at a wraparound play, ensuring the puck remained in the Red Wings’ zone, ultimately leading to Robertson’s power-play goal, pushing the score to 2-0.
Statistically, Dallas boasts the top penalty-killing unit in the NHL, successfully denying all three of Detroit’s power plays in this game and limiting them to just five shots while on the man advantage.
Looking ahead, the Red Wings will conclude their four-game road trip against Philadelphia on Tuesday, while the Stars are set to welcome the Carolina Hurricanes.
