CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Theryn Hallock put on an impressive performance, scoring 15 of her personal best 26 points in the final quarter, leading the 22nd-ranked Michigan State women’s basketball team to an 86-68 victory over Illinois on Sunday.
The junior athlete from Grand Rapids surpassed her previous high of 24 points, achieved on New Year’s Day against Purdue, by shooting a remarkable 12 for 19 from the field. In the fourth quarter alone, she made six layups and hit a three-pointer, helping the Spartans finish the game with a 24-15 scoring run.
Michigan State (15-3, 5-2 Big Ten) maintained a nine-point advantage at halftime, which carried into the fourth, where they led 62-53. Illinois initially made their mark in the final quarter with seven points from free throws, not finding their first field goal until Kendall Bostic’s layup with six minutes and three seconds left on the clock.
The Spartans were particularly dominant in the paint, netting 52 points, and they capitalized on 22 turnovers by Illinois to score 26 points. They also converted an impressive 22 out of 30 layups during the game.
Grace VanSlooten was another standout for Michigan State, finishing with 24 points after hitting 9 of 14 from the field and 6 of 7 free throws. The entire team had a commendable outing, shooting 34 of 66 from the floor, including 5 of 14 from three-point range.
Illinois (13-5, 3-4) was led by Bostic, who recorded 20 points and 14 rebounds. Adalia McKenzie added 15 points to the scoreboard, while Jasmine Brown-Hagger contributed 12 points along with four assists.
Looking ahead, the Spartans will return to their home court to take on Penn State this Wednesday, while Illinois is set to face Northwestern on Thursday.
