U.S. auto safety authorities have initiated an inquiry into concerns that vehicles manufactured by General Motors, which are equipped with specific V8 engines—including the highly popular Silverado—might experience sudden engine failures.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Thursday that it will investigate around 877,710 vehicles following the reception of 39 complaints from owners of GM vehicles utilizing L87 V8 engines.
According to the NHTSA, those who have reported issues indicated there were “no detectable warnings prior to the engine failure,” heightening the risk of accidents that could lead to injuries or property damage. Such failures can occur due to bearing defects that can cause the engine to lock up or structural breaches in the engine block caused by a connecting rod, as stated by the regulators.
The investigation encompasses a range of models from various years, specifically: the 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, the 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban, the 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, the 2021-2024 GMC Yukon, the 2021-2024 GMC Yukon XL, the 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade, and the 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV.
General Motors achieved recognition as the leading auto seller in the U.S. during the year 2024, experiencing a 4.3% growth in sales—marking its best results since 2019. The Silverado pickup also stood out as the second-most sold vehicle in the United States last year.
