The PGA Tour has announced the relocation of the Genesis Invitational, which is scheduled for next month, due to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged areas in Los Angeles, including the Pacific Palisades where Riviera Country Club is situated.
While the exact new location for the $20 million event, hosted by Tiger Woods from February 13 to 16, is still to be confirmed, the tour is considering moving to another course that participates in the West Coast Swing. This decision would help minimize logistical challenges and expenses involved in setting up the tournament, including the necessary infrastructure like grandstands and corporate hospitality areas.
Fortunately, while Riviera has not suffered any damage from the wildfires, which have tragically resulted in at least 25 fatalities and more than 12,000 buildings destroyed, the PGA Tour delayed any decisions until progress was made in battling the fires. The decision to shift locations came after consultations with the title sponsor Genesis, Riviera Country Club, and TGR Live, the event’s managing organization.
A new venue announcement is anticipated in the upcoming days. In its statement, the PGA Tour emphasized its commitment to contributing positively to the Los Angeles community and aiding in the ongoing relief efforts, urging people to provide support through their website.
Established nearly a century ago, Riviera has a rich history, having hosted prestigious events such as the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship. The course is set to be the venue for the U.S. Women’s Open in 2026, as well as the golf events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Notably, it will also welcome the U.S. Open in 2031, marking its first time hosting since 1948.
This marks the first occasion since 1998 that the Los Angeles Open, previously held at Riviera, will not take place at this iconic venue. In that year, the tournament was hosted at TPC Valencia, as Riviera was preparing for the U.S. Senior Open.
Firefighters continue to combat the two main wildfires—Palisades and Eaton—and significant work remains to clear devastated neighborhoods of hazardous ash and debris before rebuilding can commence. Authorities reported that residents will likely have to wait another week before they can begin assessing the damage to their homes due to ongoing safety concerns related to the hazardous environment in the affected areas.
Tiger Woods, who has an exemption to compete in all signature events this year, remarked that the Genesis Invitational is the only non-major PGA Tour event he has participated in since his car accident in 2021. In his recent comments during the debut of his TMRW Golf League, Woods mentioned, “We’re trying to just figure everything out and make sure that everyone is safe, and we have meetings scheduled moving forward.” He emphasized that the current focus is on assisting those who have faced losses rather than on the tournament itself, stating, “It’s more about what we can do to help everyone who’s struggling, who’s lost homes and had their lives changed.”
