LOS ANGELES — Two individuals connected to the death of former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor received prison sentences on Wednesday for lesser charges stemming from the incident.
Although neither Leonel Gutierrez nor Frank Olano was accused of directly causing Wactor’s death, it was reported that Wactor was shot while trying to confront three thieves who were stealing the catalytic converter from his vehicle in downtown Los Angeles on May 25.
Gutierrez, who is 19 years old, was sentenced to four years in California state prison after entering a no contest plea to charges of grand theft and attempted robbery. At the same time, Olano, 22, who was not involved at the scene of the crime, received a sentence of five years and eight months for pleading no contest to charges of being an accessory after the fact and possessing stolen property.
Two other co-defendants, 18-year-olds Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada, face murder charges concerning Wactor’s death. A judge recently determined that there is sufficient evidence for their case to proceed to trial, and both individuals have pleaded not guilty.
According to police and prosecutors, Wactor, 37, was leaving a rooftop bar in downtown LA with a coworker when he noticed three men attempting to steal his car. Reports indicate that one of the men fired a weapon, fatally wounding Wactor.
Following an extensive investigation, which involved the police seeking assistance from the community and heightened calls for action from Wactor’s family and friends, authorities arrested the four suspects in August.
