HENDERSON, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders have begun the process of filling their general manager position by reaching out to several candidates. They have shown interest in interviewing Chad Alexander, the assistant general manager for the Los Angeles Chargers, as well as Sheldon White, who serves as the pro scouting director for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
These interviews follow the Raiders’ initial requests to speak with John Spytek, the assistant general manager from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Jon-Eric Sullivan, the vice president of player personnel at the Green Bay Packers.
This decision comes after the dismissal of Tom Telesco last week from the organization. In addition to the general manager search, the Raiders are also looking for a new head coach, having parted ways with Antonio Pierce just days prior.
The franchise has either requested or conducted interviews with a range of candidates, including former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, as well as Detroit Lions coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. Other potential candidates include Vance Joseph, the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, Todd Monken, the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, ex-New York Jets coach Robert Saleh, and Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Ben Johnson, who has emerged as a highly sought-after candidate this hiring cycle, commented on his interview with the Raiders. When asked about any interaction with minority owner Tom Brady, Johnson replied, “I know nothing of that nature. I met him at the Packers game on Nov. 3 on the field. I saw him for a second in pregame. That’s the first time I’ve ever met him, and that’s it.” Johnson acknowledged that the seven-time Super Bowl champion likely has significant influence in the ongoing search for both a new coach and general manager.
When pressed about conversations he may have had with Brady over the weekend, Johnson humorously remarked, “Above my pay grade.”
