WASHINGTON — Anthony Edwards, the standout player for the Minnesota Timberwolves, has found himself facing another financial penalty from the NBA. The league has imposed a fine of $50,000 on Edwards for making inappropriate gestures towards an official during a game.
This disciplinary action was revealed by the league on Monday, just prior to the Timberwolves’ game where they secured a 120-106 victory against the Washington Wizards. The incident in question took place with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter of a close match against the Memphis Grizzlies, which ended in a narrow 127-125 loss for Minnesota. Notably, Edwards had a remarkable performance that evening, finishing with 41 points in the win against Washington.
The 23-year-old Edwards openly acknowledged his mistake, describing his actions as “careless, young, dumb” behavior, admitting to making offensive gestures, which he clarified had nothing to do with the officiating. “That’s all me mentally making a dumb mistake. I won’t do it again,” he stated.
In this particular match, Edwards had been taken out of the game with 2:25 remaining in the quarter, and while sitting on the bench, he received a technical foul—his ninth of the season, the highest in the league. Edwards humorously assured fans, saying, “I ain’t getting no more techs, I ain’t saying nothing else,” as he smiled. In the previous season, he accumulated a total of 15 technical fouls, most of which occurred in the first half.
This season, the monetary penalties for Edwards have reached a total of $285,000, stemming from various infractions, primarily related to his language and conduct. Last December, he was fined $100,000 for using profanity during a live television interview, along with a $75,000 penalty for verbally criticizing the referees publicly. He also incurred a $25,000 fine for inappropriate language during a media session. Earlier in November, he received a $35,000 fine for making an obscene gesture during a game.
