Rachel Maddow is set to make her return to a regular slot on MSNBC, at least during the initial months of the new Trump administration.
The network disclosed on Monday that Maddow will spearhead their coverage for the upcoming inauguration on January 20. Following that, she will restart her prime-time show, airing five nights each week at 9 p.m. Eastern, commencing that evening.
This new arrangement will be in effect until April 30, after which Maddow is expected to return to her current routine of only airing on Mondays. Meanwhile, Alex Wagner will take over her time slot from Tuesday to Friday, pursuing various reporting projects during the first 100 days of the new presidency.
Maddow had scaled back her weekly television appearances in 2022 as part of a new contract that offered her the flexibility to explore additional endeavors. Among these is a successful podcast series she has launched.
Despite this reduced presence on television, Maddow continues to be MSNBC’s most prominent figure and their leading host. According to Nielsen ratings, her show consistently averaged about 2.5 million viewers on Mondays, with that number rising by an additional 866,000 when considering time-shifted viewership throughout the week.
In addition to her evening show, Maddow will also assume the role of lead anchor for MSNBC during Trump’s inauguration coverage, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Eastern next Monday.
MSNBC has seen a significant decline in viewership following Trump’s success in the November elections, and now the network is eager to determine if it will regain its status as a primary source for Trump’s adversary. The network claims that a dip in audience post-election is common for channels that cater primarily to the supporters of the losing candidate and notes that viewership is gradually creeping back.
Recently, Maddow’s audience recorded an increase, drawing in 1.6 million viewers last Monday, which is a 20 percent rise over her averages from November and December, according to network statistics.
