OTTAWA, Ontario — In a thrilling matchup on Saturday, Sidney Morin netted her second goal during overtime, leading the Boston Fleet to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Charge. The decisive goal occurred just 1:45 into the extra period when Morin capitalized on a turnover in Ottawa’s defensive zone, receiving a pass from Hannah Brandt and skillfully shooting past Ottawa’s goalie, Gwyneth Philips.
Victoria Bach was the lone scorer for the Charge, which had previously secured three consecutive wins in regulation. Philips showcased her skills with 19 saves, notably stopping eight of Boston’s shots during the third period, even as they enjoyed two power-play chances.
On Boston’s side, goaltender Aerin Frankel performed admirably, making a total of 20 saves throughout the contest. The scoring opened with Bach finding the net as a Fleet penalty was concluding, deftly redirecting Jocelyne Larocque’s shot from the point into the goal at 6:48 into the game. The Fleet responded late in the first period, with Morin tying the game with just 4:05 to go.
Key takeaways from the game show that it marks the second victory for the Fleet against the Charge this season, following a close 3-2 win on December 17 in Boston. The Charge, meanwhile, had one power-play opportunity but could not convert, while Boston went scoreless on their four power plays.
A pivotal moment of the game occurred late in the second period when Stephanie Markowski of Ottawa sent Natalie Snodgrass on a breakaway. However, Frankel made a crucial save, maintaining the tie at one goal apiece.
Both teams prove to be formidable competitors in the PWHL, each boasting six international players. The game not only showcased the talent on the ice but also represented seven nations: Austria, Czechia, Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and Canada.
Looking ahead, the Charge will host the Toronto Sceptres on Tuesday, while the Fleet will face the same team on January 22.
