BOISE, Idaho — The University of Boise State welcomes back Zak Hill, previously an offensive coordinator, who is set to take on the roles of quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, as announced by head coach Spencer Danielson on Thursday.
Hill’s recent experience includes work as an offensive assistant and quality control coach for the Seattle Seahawks during the current season. His return to Boise State follows just three days after Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was let go from his position.
Previously, Hill spent four years with Boise State before moving on to become the offensive coordinator at Arizona State in 2020. He parted ways with ASU following the 2021 season due to an investigation concerning alleged recruiting violations that occurred during the NCAA’s COVID-19 dead period.
After leaving Arizona State, Hill spent two years coaching at the high school level, where he achieved notable success by leading Scottsdale Saguaro to an Arizona state championship in 2023.
Looking ahead, Boise State, which has secured a Group of Five bid in the College Football Playoff, is preparing for the future without standout running back Ashton Jeanty, who will be entering the NFL draft. However, expectations are high for quarterback Maddux Madsen, who made an impressive mark last season by throwing for 23 touchdowns and securing the second-highest passer rating in the Mountain West conference.
During Hill’s initial tenure at Boise State, which started in 2016, the Broncos showcased one of the conference’s most effective offensive units. Quarterback Brett Rypien earned accolades as the All-Mountain West Conference first-team quarterback, while Cedrick Wilson Jr. made history by setting the program record for single-season receiving yards in 2017. Additionally, Rypien achieved recognition as the conference’s all-time leader in career passing yards and was honored as the offensive player of the year in 2018.
