GLASGOW, Scotland — During a recent match at Ibrox, Celtic midfielder Arne Engels was hit in the face by a coin thrown from the stands late in a 3-0 defeat against Rangers.
Engels was targeted as he prepared to take a corner kick, and the projectile struck him near his left eye, causing him to drop to the ground. After receiving treatment, he managed to continue playing in the match.

Due to a ticketing dispute revolving around the allocation for away supporters, no fans from Celtic were present at the stadium during the game.
Alistair Johnston, a defender for Celtic, expressed relief that the object did not make direct contact with Engels’s eye, highlighting the potentially serious nature of the incident.

Despite securing a victory over their long-standing rivals, Rangers still find themselves trailing behind league leaders Celtic by 11 points in the Scottish Premiership standings.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed that the 21-year-old Engels, who represents Belgium internationally, escaped injury from the incident.
“It’s not obviously great for the game, but yes, he’s OK,” he stated, addressing concerns over player safety.

In response to the incident, Rangers released a statement denouncing the act “in the strongest possible terms.” The club pledged its cooperation with Police Scotland as investigations into the matter unfold.
