SOUTHAMPTON, England — West Ham’s goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski is currently “alert” and aware after being stretchered off during the team’s 1-0 victory over Southampton in a recent Premier League match, as stated by manager Julen Lopetegui.
The match experienced a stoppage lasting approximately eight minutes while Fabianski received medical attention on the pitch at St Mary’s Stadium. The 39-year-old Polish keeper suffered an injury during a collision that occurred during a corner kick and had to be substituted by Alphonse Areola in the 36th minute.
In a display of sportsmanship, Southampton’s goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale sprinted across the field to check on Fabianski amidst the alarming situation. As Fabianski was transported off the field wearing an oxygen mask, he was met with applause from the crowd, but fortunately, he did not require hospitalization.
“He received a significant blow to the head and neck area, which left him somewhat disoriented. Luckily, the update is reassuring: he is speaking, alert, and conscious,” shared Lopetegui. “I’ve spoken with him, and the medical staff reports he is feeling better. I remain optimistic about his condition. He has regained his awareness to some degree, and I’m not overly concerned. There were moments of worry, but he is on the mend, which is a positive turn for us.”
In this match, West Ham also witnessed defender Max Kilman exit in the first half. The team ultimately found the back of the net with a goal by Jarrod Bowen in the 59th minute, sealing their victory.
