EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Drew Lock is poised to take on the role of starting quarterback for the New York Giants this Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, as the team seeks to break a franchise-record 10-game losing streak.
Lock had previously started against the Atlanta Falcons, but his performance left some questions about his fitness. After a disappointing 34-7 defeat, Coach Brian Daboll revealed that the 28-year-old quarterback had sustained an issue with his right shoulder.
Following an MRI conducted on Monday, Daboll confirmed on Tuesday that Lock would be the starter provided he remained healthy. “It came back positive, so I’m good to go,” Lock stated, recounting how he got injured during a third-down pass to Daniel Bellinger in the first quarter when linebacker Matthew Judon tugged at his arm. Lock managed to finish the game despite the injury.
Amid speculation regarding a potential return to Tommy DeVito after Lock’s subpar performance—characterized by two pick-six interceptions and a lost fumble—Daboll emphasized the importance of allowing Lock to secure multiple starts and take full advantage of practice repetitions.
Lock expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming week, hoping to build upon their previous experiences together in practice. “Learning from the week before and getting the chance to implement that in practice is something I’m looking forward to. Being familiar with the cadence and huddling with the guys can only help us moving forward,” Lock said.
However, the Giants may face changes on their offensive line, as center John Michael Schmitz is struggling with an ankle injury and was unable to practice on Tuesday. Schmitz left the locker room in a boot on his right foot, leading to veteran guard Greg Van Roten stepping in at center. Lock noted that he had also collaborated with guard Austin Schlottmann as his center while with the Denver Broncos.
Currently, the Giants rank at the bottom of the league in scoring offense, averaging just 14.3 points per game. Following their bye week, they benched Daniel Jones, who soon requested his release from the team. Since Jones’ departure, DeVito has started two games, while Lock has taken the helm for three, with the Giants managing to score a total of 59 points over those outings. Notably, 20 of those points were against Dallas during a closely contested Thanksgiving Day game.
Additionally, several players were reported absent during Tuesday’s practice, including running back Tyrone Tracy (ankle), wide receiver Malik Nabers (knee-foot), cornerback Greg Stroman (shoulder-shin), defensive tackle Cory Durden (shoulder), inside linebacker Micah McFadden (neck), and cornerback Dru Phillips (shoulder). The team was scheduled to have a day off on Christmas and would resume practice on Thursday.
During Tuesday’s practice session, the Giants enjoyed the festive spirit, kicking off with the tune “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” echoing through their indoor facility. Jones, now with the Minnesota Vikings, reportedly sent Christmas gifts to the offensive linemen of the Giants.
“DJ always comes through for us and looks after the guys,” Lock commented. “That’s just who he is; he genuinely cares.”
