SAO PAULO — After a 14-year journey that included a significant period in Chinese soccer, former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is set to reunite with his childhood club, Sao Paulo. The announcement was made by Sao Paulo’s president, Julio Casares, who shared images on his social media accounts featuring himself alongside the 33-year-old ex-Brazil international. Casares referred to this transfer as “a super transfer.”
Shortly after the announcement, Oscar expressed his gratitude to Shanghai Port, where he spent eight years competing in the Chinese Super League. “Today I conclude a chapter that has had a profound impact on my life,” he commented. “I leave with immense gratitude and pride for all we accomplished together.”
Oscar’s return to Sao Paulo comes via a free transfer, although specifics regarding the length of his contract remain undisclosed by both parties. However, local media speculations suggest he has inked a three-year deal with the club.
This marks Oscar’s return to the club he left in 2010 to join Internacional, another Brazilian team. His voyage to international stardom began in earnest when he moved to Chelsea in 2012, where he enjoyed a successful stint, securing a Europa League title along with two Premier League championships.
In January 2017, Oscar made a significant career move to Shanghai for a reported fee of $73 million, joining midway through Chelsea’s season. During his time in China, he garnered much success, winning three Super League titles and establishing himself as a beloved figure among fans across Asia.
Oscar’s illustrious career also includes a notable performance for Brazil during the 2014 World Cup, where he scored in the infamous 7-1 semifinal loss to Germany, a match that ultimately paved the way for the latter to secure the championship.
