HONOLULU — In a thrilling matchup during the consolation round of the Diamond Head Classic, Deywilk Tavarez emerged as the standout player, scoring 30 points to propel Charleston to a 77-68 victory over Loyola Chicago on Monday.
Tavarez showcased his shooting prowess, making 9 of 19 field goals, including 7 of 16 attempts from beyond the arc, while also converting 5 of 6 free-throw opportunities. His performance was instrumental in helping the Cougars improve their record to 9-3. Teammate Derrin Boyd also had a significant impact on the game, finishing with 16 points on 5 for 9 shooting, which included a 3 for 6 mark from three-point range, along with 3 of 4 free throws. Ante Brzovic contributed to the win with 14 points, shooting 5 of 13 from the floor, while also recording six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.
For the Ramblers, Jalen Quinn led the scoring with 17 points, adding two steals to his performance. Sheldon Edwards chipped in with 11 points and two steals, while Miles Rubin added 10 points to the total, but it was not enough to secure the victory.
Charleston took control of the game in the second half, executing an impressive 8-0 run that turned a one-point deficit into a 63-56 lead with just over six minutes remaining. Boyd was particularly effective in the latter half, scoring 13 of his points to help seal the win for the Cougars.
