Aaron Rodgers is currently weighing his options regarding his future in football. The veteran quarterback understands that if he chooses to make a comeback, the circumstances could be out of his control, especially in relation to the New York Jets.
Last week, the 41-year-old player indicated that he would take some time to reflect after concluding his 20th NFL season. On a recent Monday, he hinted that a decision about his return with the Jets could be influenced by the team’s management choices shortly after their regular-season finale on January 6. “I think there’s a scenario where they simply decide, ‘Thank you, but we’re going in a different direction,’” Rodgers shared during his regular guest spot on “The Pat McAfee Show.” He also mentioned that the team might wait to evaluate the new coaching staff before making any decisions.
The Jets are actively engaged in finding a new general manager following the dismissal of Joe Douglas last month. Furthermore, they are in search of a head coach after parting ways with Robert Saleh, who was succeeded temporarily by defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. With a record of 4-11 this season, New York is set to miss the playoffs for the 14th consecutive year, marking the longest ongoing drought in the NFL. Owner Woody Johnson now faces a critical choice about whether to retain Rodgers—who is under contract for the next season—or to allow him to leave, thereby giving the new management a clean slate.
Rodgers has expressed that if he continues his career, his preference lies with the Jets. He reiterated his willingness to accept a reduced salary and provided mentorship to a younger quarterback should the team decide to draft one. However, it remains uncertain whether Johnson shares this sentiment regarding Rodgers’ return.
An article released last week brought to light claims of dysfunction within the organization, including allegations that Johnson is swayed by his teenage sons, Brick and Jack. Rodgers humorously commented on the potential of being released, saying, “Being released would be a first. Being released by a teenager, that would also be a first.” He laughed off the idea, alluding to the recent report and added, “I’m open to everything and will find the comedy in all of it. If that happens, hey, it’s a great story.”
Acquired from Green Bay before the 2023 season, Rodgers’ debut with the Jets lasted a mere four plays due to a significant injury, tearing his left Achilles tendon. Though he made a comeback for the season opener, he has faced challenges with various injuries, leading to inconsistent performance. In a recent loss to the Los Angeles Rams, he threw his 499th regular-season touchdown pass, bringing him one step closer to joining an elite club of players who have reached 500 touchdowns, including legends like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre. This season, Rodgers has recorded 24 touchdown passes with eight interceptions.
Despite his presence, the Jets have not found success. During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers suggested that internal issues might be hindering the team’s performance. “Once those problems are addressed, it will be easier to secure victories. While it may not directly impact the players on the field, it certainly affects the culture, chemistry, and overall atmosphere of the organization. That’s an area where improvement is necessary.”
