ORLANDO, Fla. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a drone collision that occurred during a holiday performance in downtown Orlando over the weekend. The incident led to injuries for a 7-year-old boy who underwent surgery following the event.
During the show, held at Lake Eola Park on Saturday night, several drones collided and fell into a large audience that had gathered to watch the spectacle. This event had received the necessary permits from the FAA prior to taking place.
In a statement, the city of Orlando expressed concern, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family and all those impacted by the outcome of this event.” The city confirmed it is coordinating with both the vendor responsible for the drone display and the FAA to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
Adriana Edgerton shared with local news an account of her son, Alexander, who was struck in the chest by a falling drone. She noted, “The blade cut his mouth, but there’s an actual imprint of the drone on his chest.” This frightening incident highlights the potential dangers associated with drone shows.
The vendor for the event, Sky Elements Drone Shows from Fort Worth, Texas, did not respond to inquiries following the incident. Their website states a commitment to putting “accuracy, execution, and compliance first” in all their operations.
Typically, drone displays necessitate a waiver for the simultaneous operation of multiple drones, and the FAA diligently reviews each application to ensure the safety of both the audience and those on the ground.
