Phillies obtain southpaw Jesús Luzardo from Marlins for prospect exchange

The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Sunday the acquisition of left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins.
In exchange, the Marlins received two prospects: outfielder Emaarion Boyd and infielder Starlyn Caba.
Additionally, Philadelphia acquired catcher Paul McIntosh as part of the trade deal.

Luzardo has had a career marked by injuries but showcased promise during his time with Miami.
In the 2024 season, he posted a 5.00 ERA over 12 starts before a lumbar stress reaction put an early end to his year.
In 2023, when the Marlins reached the playoffs, Luzardo made 32 starts, finishing with a record of 10-10 and a 3.58 ERA, coupled with an impressive 208 strikeouts and a strikeout rate of 30%.

With Luzardo’s arrival, the Phillies strengthen their already impressive pitching rotation, which includes established talents such as Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez, and Cristopher Sánchez.

On the other side, the Marlins have been actively trading away veteran players to focus on rebuilding their roster.
Notable names traded away during this process include three-time batting champion Luis Arraez and standout outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., along with other key contributors earning higher salaries.

The prospects involved in the trade come with notable experience as well. Caba, 19, participated in 116 minor league games spanning three levels for the Phillies during the 2023-2024 seasons.
Meanwhile, 21-year-old Boyd was drafted by the Phillies in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB Draft and played 198 games within Philadelphia’s minor league framework.

To facilitate Luzardo’s addition to the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert for assignment.
