Trump appoints ‘Apprentice’ creator Mark Burnett as special envoy to the UK

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Television producer Mark Burnett, known for his influential role in bringing Donald Trump into the spotlight with the reality show “The Apprentice,” has been appointed by the president-elect as the special envoy to the United Kingdom for his forthcoming administration.

President-elect Trump made the announcement on Saturday, emphasizing Burnett’s extensive background in television production and business. He noted that Burnett’s experience contributes a unique combination of diplomatic savvy and international acclaim to this significant position.

Originally from London, Burnett is widely recognized for creating major television shows such as “Survivor” and “The Voice.” However, his partnership with Trump on “The Apprentice,” which debuted on NBC in 2004, has arguably solidified his legacy. Although Trump was already a prominent figure in real estate and pop culture, the success of “The Apprentice” elevated his status to a household name. Trump ended his ties with NBC in 2015, coinciding with the launch of his first presidential campaign.

The appointment of Burnett aligns with Trump’s strategy of incorporating individuals with notable backgrounds in entertainment and politics into his administration. Other key figures include Pete Hegseth, previously a co-host on “Fox & Friends Weekend,” chosen as defense secretary, as well as Dr. Mehmet Oz, a former television personality and Senate candidate in Pennsylvania.

Trump’s previous campaign efforts in 2016 were marred by controversy, especially regarding his conduct on “The Apprentice.” Notably, remarks made by Trump about being able to sexually assault women due to his fame came to light, which continued to shape public perception of him.

Nearly ten years after departing from his role in reality television, Trump’s history in the industry remains integral to both his narrative and political ascent. “The Apprentice” showcased Trump Tower as a symbol of success and ambition and served as a launching pad for Trump’s campaign, which began in the lobby of the tower.

In his statement regarding Burnett, Trump praised the producer’s history of creating and producing iconic television shows, highlighting “The Apprentice” and noting Burnett’s impressive collection of 13 Emmy Awards.

In another announcement on the same day, Trump declared casino entrepreneur Tilman Fertitta would be his nominee for U.S. ambassador to Italy.

Burnett’s role as special envoy typically encompasses diplomatic responsibilities in significant global areas, such as the Middle East; Trump has indicated he wishes for Steven Witkoff to occupy this role. The United Kingdom, known for its strong alliance with the U.S., is not an ordinary candidate for such envoy positions.

Nevertheless, Trump has designated various loyal associates to special envoy roles ahead of his inauguration on January 20, including Richard Grenell, his former ambassador to Germany, for special missions. Other similar appointments announced include Adam Boehler as special presidential envoy for hostage affairs and Keith Kellogg as special envoy for Ukraine and Russia.

On December 2, Trump revealed Warren Stephens, a billionaire investment banker, as his choice for the more traditional role of U.S. ambassador to the UK. This raises potential questions about overlapping responsibilities, but Trump affirmed that Burnett’s focus will be on strengthening diplomatic ties, emphasizing mutual interests such as trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges.
