Feds issue flight restrictions over critical sites in New York amid continued drone mystery

New York has implemented temporary flight restrictions over critical infrastructure sites in response to increased drone activity reports, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday night.

The move, coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is described as a precautionary measure.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas informed Hochul of the restrictions, which she emphasized are not in response to any specific threats. “There is no threat to these sites,” Hochul stated. “This is purely precautionary.”

Details Remain Limited

The governor did not disclose which sites are affected or the duration of the flight restrictions. However, she underscored the state’s commitment to monitoring the situation closely while urging Congress to pass legislation empowering states and local law enforcement to manage drone technology effectively.

Hochul has been in communication with federal leaders about the growing reports of drone sightings since mid-November. Last month, runways at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh were temporarily closed due to a reported drone sighting.

Enhanced Detection Measures

To bolster security, drone detection technology provided by the Biden administration is now operational in New York. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed the deployment of at least one 360-degree radar detection system from Robin Radar Systems along the New York-New Jersey corridor.

“This technology is essential as we adapt to the challenges posed by evolving drone activity,” Schumer said.

While no immediate threats have been identified, state and federal authorities remain vigilant, working together to ensure public safety as the issue of unauthorized drone activity continues to evolve.
