CINCINNATI — On Friday, the Cincinnati Reds made a significant move by acquiring experienced catcher Jose Trevino from the New York Yankees in a trade.

Trevino, recognized primarily for his defensive strengths, posted a batting average of .215, along with eight home runs and 28 runs batted in over the course of 74 games this season with the American League East champions. By the season’s end, he had transitioned to a backup role, as rookie Austin Wells took over the starting position behind the plate.

In exchange for Trevino, Cincinnati sent reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson to the Yankees. Cruz had a challenging season, recording a 3-8 win-loss record and a 4.86 ERA after appearing in 69 games. He managed to strike out 109 batters across 66 2/3 innings of work. Jackson, who will celebrate his 29th birthday on Wednesday, struggled at the plate, hitting .122 with three home runs in 58 games while playing for Tampa Bay this year. He had recently signed a minor league contract with Cincinnati last month.

Cincinnati also has another catcher on the roster, Tyler Stephenson, who is 28 years old and is coming off an impressive season. Stephenson had a batting average of .258 and contributed significantly with 19 home runs and 66 RBIs.

Trevino, now 32, began his major league career with the Texas Rangers in 2018. He achieved recognition in 2022 as an All-Star and received a Gold Glove award while playing for New York, completing the season with a .248 batting average, 11 home runs, and 43 RBIs over 115 games.
