Roki Sasaki: MLB’s next free agent superstar

With his blazing fastball and record-setting performances, 23-year-old Roki Sasaki has become one of the most sought-after pitchers in baseball.

Sasaki’s dominance in Japan

Nicknamed the “Monster of the Reiwa Era,” Sasaki has already carved out a legendary career in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). In 2024, he posted a 10-5 record with a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111 innings. His career stats are even more dazzling, with a 2.02 ERA and 524 strikeouts over 414 2/3 innings.

Sasaki gained international fame in 2022 by pitching a perfect game with 19 strikeouts and setting a new world record with 13 consecutive Ks. His back-to-back dominant performances made him a sensation, cementing his status as one of the best pitchers in the world.

The decision to move to MLB

Sasaki’s team, the Chiba Lotte Marines, recently posted him for MLB consideration, giving teams until January 23 to make their case. Despite being only 23, Sasaki is ready to take on the MLB challenge, even though his contract will be limited by international signing rules.

Why Sasaki’s free agency is unique

Sasaki’s age and experience in NPB mean he will be subject to international bonus pool restrictions, significantly limiting his earnings compared to older players like Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Sasaki’s decision to enter MLB now shows his confidence in his abilities, as he could wait two more years to secure a much larger contract.

The competition to sign Sasaki

More than half of MLB teams have reportedly scouted Sasaki, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres emerging as early frontrunners. The Dodgers have expressed strong interest, while the Padres hope to leverage Yu Darvish’s influence as a mentor to Japanese players. Other teams, including the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox, are also in the mix.

Sasaki’s devastating 102.5 mph fastball and world-class splitter make him a force on the mound. His poise, athleticism, and drive to compete on the global stage have scouts and fans eagerly awaiting his MLB debut.

The countdown begins

Sasaki plans to finalize his MLB future after January 15, 2025, when the international amateur signing period opens. Wherever he lands, Sasaki is poised to become the next global baseball phenomenon, following in the footsteps of Shohei Ohtani.
