CHICAGO — Petr Mrazek, the goaltender for the Blackhawks, has made significant strides in his recovery after facing some challenging weeks.
On Thursday, Mrazek was officially activated from the injured reserve list, while goaltender Drew Commesso has been sent back to the minors. In the recent game against Seattle, Mrazek provided backup for Arvid Soderblom, contributing to Chicago’s 3-1 win.
Mrazek, aged 32, left the ice during a game against Winnipeg on December 7 due to a left groin injury and subsequently fell ill with the flu the following day.
“It’s a relief that the injury wasn’t severe,” Mrazek stated. “I was cautious throughout the process. Usually, staying in the net can worsen the situation. Facing that alongside the flu made things more complicated. I focused on getting through it and returning to the right path.”
In his 20 appearances this season, Mrazek holds a record of 7-11-1, with a goals-against average of 2.83 and a save percentage of .906. Over the past two seasons, he has managed a considerable workload for the team, although he does not believe that contributed to his recent injury.
“I’ve also been handling a few personal matters and have been traveling frequently between Chicago and various cities,” he explained. “I think it all combined to signal that my body needed a break, both physically and mentally, and now I’m ready to get back on track.”
Mrazek refrained from giving specific details about his personal challenges.
Captain Nick Foligno expressed support for Mrazek’s return, noting the positive impact he has on the team.
“It’s really great to have him back on the ice for the morning skate ahead of the game with the Kraken,” he remarked. “He’s a vital part of our team’s success, and his skills as a goalie are exceptional. Seeing him in good spirits and back out there is crucial for our group. His energy is infectious.”
