American Airlines reaches agreement in lawsuit with three Black men removed from a flight.

American Airlines announced on Thursday that it has reached a settlement regarding a federal race discrimination lawsuit brought forth by three Black men who were removed from a flight in January.

While the financial specifics of the settlement remain undisclosed, the airline characterized the outcome as an “amicable resolution” to the lawsuit, which was initiated in May in a federal court located in New York.

In an official statement, American Airlines noted, “The agreement allows all parties to move forward and focus on what matters most – ensuring a safe and inclusive travel experience for every customer.”

The plaintiffs, identified as Alvin Jackson, Emmanuel Jean Joseph, and Xavier Veal, claimed they, along with five other Black men, were instructed to leave an American Airlines flight traveling from Phoenix to New York on January 5, 2024. This action followed complaints made by a flight attendant regarding the body odor of an unidentified passenger.

According to the lawsuit, the three men insisted that they were not responsible for any body odor, were not seated in close proximity to one another, and had no prior acquaintance before the incident. While American Airlines offered to rebook them on another flight, after approximately one hour without alternative options to New York that evening, they were ultimately allowed to reboard the aircraft.

It was reported by the plaintiffs’ legal representatives that the airline has since terminated the flight attendants involved in the situation.

In their statement, the plaintiffs expressed satisfaction that American Airlines took their complaint seriously. They emphasized their hope that incidents like this would not happen again to Black passengers or other individuals of color. “Our goal in speaking out has always been to create change. We are proud that we used our voices to make a difference in the lives of Black Americans,” they stated.

In a communication to airline employees in June, the CEO of American Airlines, Robert Isom, expressed his discontent regarding the incident.

“I am incredibly disappointed by what happened on that flight and the breakdown of our procedures,” Isom remarked. “We fell short of our commitments and failed our customers in this incident.”
