DURHAM, N.C. — In a commanding performance, the No. 9 ranked Duke women’s basketball team triumphed over Wofford with a score of 93-58 on Wednesday night. Freshman Toby Fournier was a standout player, netting 16 of her total 23 points in the first half, helping the Blue Devils secure a substantial lead early in the game. Alongside Fournier, Oluchi Okananwa also shined, contributing a season-high 20 points. Duke showcased impressive shooting, finishing the game at 50.7% from the field, despite a somewhat lower accuracy from beyond the arc, where they hit only 6 of 23 attempts. Dominating on the boards, the Blue Devils out-rebounded the Terriers 56-20, establishing control throughout the match.
On the other hand, Rachael Rose was the top scorer for Wofford, contributing 23 points to her team’s efforts. However, the Terriers struggled overall, achieving only a 33.8% shooting rate and sinking 7 out of 28 three-point attempts. They faced a rocky start, missing 15 of their first 18 shots, which set the tone for their uphill battle for the remainder of the game. There were additional setbacks for Wofford, as reserve player Sara Deidda sustained a significant injury when her right knee buckled during a play just before halftime.
For Duke, this victory marks their second consecutive win after a loss to South Carolina, and they have now claimed eight victories out of their last nine games since mid-November. The Blue Devils dominated on the boards early in the contest, particularly in the initial seven minutes, where they achieved a remarkable 15-5 rebounding edge, including outpacing Wofford 8-1 in offensive rebounds. This strong start led to a 9-0 advantage in second-chance points, forcing Wofford’s coach Jimmy Garrity to call a timeout when his team found themselves trailing 14-3. Unfortunately for Wofford, they were unable to close the gap, never getting within single digits of Duke’s lead again.
Highlighting individual performances, Fournier, who was recognized as the No. 10 recruit by espnW, had a stellar game following her season-high performance of 27 points against Virginia Tech, where she shot 12-for-17. In the game against Wofford, she continued to impress by making 8 of her 11 attempts from the field.
Looking ahead, Wofford will continue its road trip with a game against Lehigh on Saturday, while Duke is set to face South Florida on the same day.
