MONACO — Paris Saint-Germain solidified their dominance in the French league by extending their lead to ten points at the top of the standings with a 4-2 victory over Monaco prior to the year-end break. This thrilling encounter, held on Wednesday at the Stade Louis II, was notably impacted by an injury to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Ousmane Dembélé shone for PSG, scoring two goals, while striker Goncalo Ramos, who was introduced as a substitute, played a crucial role by regaining the lead for PSG with a header from a corner kick just seven minutes before the match concluded.
Despite the defeat, Monaco maintained their position in third place in the league, sharing the same points as second-placed Marseille, who still have one match to play.
Donnarumma suffered a substantial injury early in the game when he was struck in the face by an opponent’s cleat. The incident occurred in the 17th minute, when Wilfried Singo attempted to leap over the sliding goalkeeper after having his initial shot blocked, inadvertently making contact with Donnarumma’s face instead.
Images from the match displayed the Italian international with a noticeable cut beneath his right eye. Although Singo had previously received a warning, he escaped a potential red card for the foul.
After receiving treatment on the field, Donnarumma was ultimately unable to continue, leaving the pitch on his own to be replaced by Matvey Safonov.
In the first half, Désiré Doué had given PSG an early lead, but Monaco’s Eliesse Ben Seghir equalized from the penalty spot after the halftime break. Breel Embolo then put Monaco ahead at the 60-minute mark, creating an exciting challenge for PSG.
However, the momentum shifted back to PSG with Dembélé scoring his first goal by capitalizing on a rebound in the 64th minute. Just before the end of the match, he sealed the victory for his team by netting a second goal during stoppage time.
The match was rescheduled earlier due to a conflict with the Trophée des Champions, in which both clubs will participate on January 5 in Doha, coinciding with the weekend when the French league is set to resume play.
