Two-time Stanley Cup champion Justin Schultz declares retirement following 12 seasons in the NHL.

Two-time Stanley Cup champion Justin Schultz has announced his retirement from professional hockey following a commendable 12-season career in the NHL, which culminated in a brief period playing in Europe.

The NHL Players’ Association confirmed Schultz’s retirement decision on Wednesday, revealing that the 34-year-old had parted ways with HC Lugano in Switzerland just the previous week.

Schultz achieved notable success while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, securing the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017. Initially drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round of the 2008 NHL Draft, he opted not to sign with them and instead signed with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent in 2012. Over the years, he also contributed to the Washington Capitals and the Seattle Kraken, alongside his most recent stint in Switzerland, where he played eight games this autumn before retiring.

In a statement released by the team, Schultz elaborated on his decision, stating, “Mine is a strictly personal choice. I discussed it with my family, and I made the decision to end my career here and return to Canada. I thank Hockey Club Lugano for the professionalism shown and for respecting my choice.”

Throughout his career, Schultz amassed an impressive 366 points over the course of 826 games, including regular-season and playoff contests, playing for the Oilers, Penguins, Capitals, and Kraken. His impact on the game and contributions to his teams were widely acknowledged during his time in the league.
