NEW DELHI — A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Mumbai when an Indian navy speedboat collided with a ferry that was transporting over 100 passengers to a well-known tourist location. The collision, which took place on Wednesday, resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, according to the navy’s reports.
According to official statements, 99 passengers aboard the ferry were successfully rescued. The ferry named “Neelkamal” was en route to Elephanta Island when the speedboat, engaged in engine tests, lost control and struck the ferry.
Among the deceased were one member of the navy and two other personnel affiliated with a naval vessel. In response to the incident, both navy and civilian boats participated in the rescue efforts, ensuring that survivors were swiftly transported to nearby jetties and medical facilities.
The rescue operation was extensive, utilizing four helicopters and a total of 11 navy vessels to assist those in need. Elephanta Island is renowned for its Elephanta Caves, which boast temples and sculptures that depict scenes from Hindu mythology, making it a favored destination for tourists visiting Mumbai, a major hub for finance and entertainment in India.
