BRISBANE, Australia — Renowned Indian allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday during a press conference that was called abruptly after the ongoing test match against Australia and India ended in a draw at the Gabba.

“It’s a deeply emotional moment for me,” remarked Ashwin. “I have truly enjoyed my time on the field and have cherished many memorable experiences alongside Rohit, our captain, and my fellow teammates. While I believe I still have some good cricket left in me, I prefer to channel that energy into club-level cricket.”

Since making his debut in 2011, Ashwin has represented India in 106 test matches, claiming a remarkable 537 wickets. Notably, he has achieved the most success against Australia, having taken 115 wickets at an average of 28.58 over the course of 23 tests against them.

“A heartfelt thank you to the Australian cricket team. They have always been formidable opponents,” Ashwin expressed. “The competition has been immensely enjoyable.”

Captain Rohit Sharma revealed that he had been aware of Ashwin’s intentions to retire prior to the series but had persuaded him to participate in the Adelaide test. However, the 38-year-old spinner was notably absent from the third test in Brisbane, with Ravindra Jadeja stepping into his role.

Sharma commented on Ashwin’s decision, indicating, “He felt that since he was not required in the series at this point, it was better for him to bid farewell to the team.”

As a result of this announcement, Ashwin will no longer participate in the remaining two tests in Australia. Jadeja and Washington Sundar will now serve as the two spin options for the Indian team squad going forward.
