SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Humane Society has reported the euthanasia of three dogs involved in a tragic incident where their owner was fatally injured last week in a park, as bystanders looked on in horror while attempting to assist him.

The attack occurred on Friday afternoon at the children’s playground section of Mesa Viking Neighborhood Park, situated in the Mira Mesa area. A second individual sustained bite injuries and required hospitalization following the incident, as reported by local news outlets.

The deceased dog owner, who has not been publicly named, was rushed to a hospital but did not survive the attack. In a swift response, one of the dogs was quickly secured in a vehicle by authorities, while the other two managed to flee the scene but were later intercepted by police.

On Sunday, the Humane Society announced that all three XL bully dogs were euthanized after a second owner consented to the decision, noting the humane course of action following the incident.

Witnesses at the park attempted to intervene using various means, including a shovel and a golf club, prior to the arrival of law enforcement, who ultimately utilized a stun gun to stop the dogs from continuing their attack.

In a statement, Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson expressed condolences, saying, “Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

While XL bullies are not officially categorized as a distinct breed, they are described as a larger variant of the Standard American Bully by the National Kennel Club.
