KYIV, Ukraine — A drone launched by Ukraine targeted a facility utilized by Russia’s National Guard in Chechnya on Sunday, amid ongoing retaliatory actions following a widespread air assault by Moscow.
Social media footage captured the drone flying low over Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, located approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the front lines in Ukraine, before it detonated. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties stemming from the strike.
Ramzan Kadyrov, the Chechen leader, confirmed the drone hit a site associated with the Akhmat Grozny riot police battalion and reported that two additional drones were intercepted by air defense systems. Kadyrov stated that he would seek retribution against Ukrainian forces and indicated that he had ordered missile strikes on military targets in Kharkiv as a countermeasure to the drone attack. However, this assertion remains unverified.
On the same day, Russia’s Defense Ministry announced the downing of 15 Ukrainian drones overnight across the Kursk and Belgorod regions, as well as over the Black Sea, without referencing the incident in Grozny.
Additionally, a Ukrainian security service official claimed that their intelligence had carried out a special operation to disrupt logistical fuel supply routes linking occupied Crimea to Zaporizhzhia. This operation, executed on Saturday, reportedly led to the destruction of a train locomotive and 40 tanker cars. Accusations of sabotage included explosive actions that damaged railway tracks while a train was in transit, facilitated by HIMARS missile systems.
“This operation effectively incapacitated a crucial railway line employed to sustain Russian forces for a significant time,” noted the anonymous official sharing sensitive details.
The weekend saw escalating Ukrainian counterstrikes in response to Russia’s bombardment on Friday, which involved 93 cruise and ballistic missiles, as well as almost 200 drones targeting critical energy infrastructure across Ukraine.
Moreover, Russian military operations appear to be advancing gradually in eastern Ukraine. A report from the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War indicated that geolocated footage identified Russian forces within the settlement of Kurakhove, which had been under siege for several weeks.
This situation brings added uncertainty regarding the future of the conflict as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump prepares to assume office next month, raising concerns about the possibility of continued vital U.S. military assistance to Ukraine. In an interview with TIME magazine, Trump expressed opposition to allowing Ukraine to target locations within Russia using weapons supplied by the U.S.
Simultaneously, overnight into Sunday, Russia launched 108 drones across Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian air force. Reports indicated that air defenses intercepted 56 of these drones, while another 49 lost contact with radar after failing to reach their intended targets. Three drones reportedly returned to Russian territory.
Governor Vitalii Kim informed the public that two individuals sustained injuries in Mykolaiv due to the drone attack, which also inflicted damage to the local infrastructure.
