In the southern French city of Avignon, a significant gathering took place on Saturday, as hundreds came together prior to the verdict in a highly publicized trial. In this case, numerous men are facing allegations of having raped Gisèle Pelicot while she was incapacitated by substances administered by her husband.

The court is scheduled to reach its decisions by December 20 regarding the 51 accused individuals. Recently, prosecutors proposed the most severe punishment for aggravated rape, seeking a 20-year sentence for Gisèle’s former husband, Dominique Pelicot, who is 72 years old. Gisèle Pelicot, now 71, has emerged as a powerful figure in the fight against sexual violence, sharing her distressing experiences during the trial that has captivated national attention.

Demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse, with many carrying signs proclaiming messages such as, “Victims, we believe you, rapists we see you,” and “Shame changes sides.” A prominent banner on display boldly stated, “Rape has no nationality,” while activists expressed their support by attaching heartfelt notes titled “Gentle words for Gisèle” to a nearby fence.

In a show of solidarity, activist Marine Thebaud, affiliated with the Family Planning association, voiced her hope that justice would be fully served in Gisèle’s case, calling for an end to impunity and appropriate punishment for offenders. She emphasized the need to champion the rights of all victims affected by patriarchal violence.

Another participant, Alain Souberan, shared his motivation for joining the rally, attributing his involvement to his partner’s dedication to feminism and her membership in the Avignon feminist choir. “I believe men also have a role in supporting this movement,” he stated.

The trial, which commenced in September, has gained international attention, with Pelicot’s bravery in confronting her alleged attackers turning her into a poignant symbol for victims of sexual assault.
