Ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner, jailed for sexting child, eyes political comeback in New York City

Former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner has taken a significant step toward re-entering politics, filing to run for a New York City Council seat. This move could mark the start of a political comeback after his career was derailed by multiple sexting scandals and a criminal conviction.

Campaign committee established

Campaign finance records show that Weiner has created a campaign committee, “Weiner 25,” listing himself as a candidate for a council seat in lower Manhattan. While this action suggests serious intent, Weiner emphasized that he has not yet decided to formally launch a campaign.

Participation in a political forum

Weiner stated that setting up the committee allows him to participate in an upcoming forum hosted by the Downtown Independent Democrats, giving him an opportunity to gauge public interest and support.

Speaking on his weekly radio show, The Middle with Anthony Weiner, the former congressman expressed uncertainty about re-entering politics, noting that he is carefully considering the personal implications of a potential campaign.

A controversial history

Weiner served in Congress for 12 years before resigning in 2011 due to a sexting scandal. His 2013 mayoral campaign was similarly marred by revelations of additional explicit photos shared under the alias “Carlos Danger.”

In 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to having illicit online contact with a 15-year-old girl, resulting in a 21-month federal prison sentence and his registration as a sex offender. Released in 2019, Weiner has since sought to rebuild his public image.

Whether Weiner will fully commit to running for office remains uncertain, but his filing marks the first formal step toward a potential return to the political arena.
