BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University has officially announced the appointment of Dowell Loggains as its new head coach, following his recent role as offensive coordinator at South Carolina. Athletic director Doug Gillin revealed the news on Saturday, confirming that Loggains will be under a five-year contract.

Loggains, 44, takes over from Shawn Clark, who was dismissed after the Mountaineers concluded the season with a 5-6 record— marking their first losing record since 2013. His coaching experience includes a two-season stint at South Carolina, as well as two seasons at Arkansas, where he played a key role as an assistant. Additionally, he boasts a lengthy 16-year career in the NFL, serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for teams including the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, and the New York Jets.

Doug Gillin expressed confidence in Loggains’ ability, stating, “He brings experience as a leader and play-caller at the highest levels of professional and college football. He is a great recruiter and believes strongly in building relationships. He aligns with our core values of academic integrity, competitive excellence, social responsibility, and providing a world-class experience. This is a great day for App State.”

During his time at South Carolina, Loggains oversaw an offense that featured standout talents such as LaNorris Sellers, a highly-regarded dual-threat quarterback, and running back Raheim “Rocket” Sanders. Together, they propelled the Gamecocks to boast the third-ranked rushing offense in the Southeastern Conference.

Loggains previously worked as the tight ends coach at Arkansas for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, and his NFL career includes collaboration with notable quarterbacks like Sam Darnold, Jay Cutler, Mitchell Trubisky, Brian Hoyer, and Vince Young. Under Clark’s leadership, the Mountaineers compiled a record of 40-24; however, the team has missed bowl game opportunities in two of the last three seasons, despite entering the season as the pre-season favorites in the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division.
