Georgia Tech’s football program has solidified its future by offering head coach Brent Key a new five-year contract, reflecting his effective leadership during the recent season. This extension, announced on Friday, comes as a result of the team’s strong performance, marking their best regular season finish since 2018.
In addition to Key’s contract, the university’s board of trustees also approved a five-year extension for athletic director J Batt, ensuring both Key and Batt will remain with the Yellow Jackets until 2029. The revised deals add two more years to their original contracts, though the financial specifics of these agreements were not disclosed.
Under Coach Key, the Yellow Jackets concluded the season with a 7-5 record, including a notable 5-3 finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Among their impressive achievements, they handed No. 14 Miami its first loss of the year and put up a fierce battle against No. 5 Georgia, which ended in a narrow defeat after an unprecedented eight overtime periods, with a final score of 44-42 in their last game.
Key, who stepped in as interim coach after the dismissal of Geoff Collins following four games in 2022, has turned the program around. Collins left Georgia Tech with a disappointing 10-28 record over his tenure. After assuming the coaching role, Key managed to lead the team to a 4-4 record for the remainder of the 2022 season. The progression continued in 2023 with a final record of 7-6, capped by a triumph in the Gasparilla Bowl, paving the way for the possibility of the team’s first eight-win season since 2016.
Key’s overall record now stands at 18-15, along with a 14-9 record within the ACC. His commitment to revitalizing the program is evident, as he recently secured a recruiting class ranked among the top 30 nationally. “I am so proud and grateful to work with incredible coaches, staff and student-athletes every single day,” Key expressed in a statement. “Together, we’re building something special and I’m looking forward to continuing to work to return Tech football to where it belongs.”
With these recent developments, both Brent Key and J Batt are poised to steer Georgia Tech towards a promising future, enhancing the program’s competitiveness and reputation in college football.
