Two Romanian individuals have been detained in Romania and are facing charges related to the stabbing of an Iranian journalist in London earlier this year. This information was disclosed by prosecutors on Thursday.

Nandito Badea, aged 19, and George Stana, aged 23, were arrested on Wednesday and are expected to be extradited to the United Kingdom. They have been charged with wounding with the intent to cause serious harm.

The incident took place on March 29 when Pouria Zeraati, a journalist working for Iran International, was stabbed in the leg outside his residence in Wimbledon, London. After the assault, Zeraati made a quick recovery and confirmed his return to work, emphasizing that “the show must go on.”

Authorities revealed that two attackers assaulted Zeraati before fleeing the scene with a driver. Subsequently, the suspects traveled out of the country through Heathrow Airport.

This attack was classified as a matter of counterterrorism due to Zeraati’s role as a journalist and the growing threats faced by Iranian journalists operating in the U.K. Iran International, a satellite news outlet broadcasting in Farsi, has been under threat for its critical reporting on Iran’s ruling government.

A senior Iranian diplomat in London has denied any connection between Iran and the attack on Zeraati. Additionally, investigators from the Metropolitan Police have revealed that they foiled approximately 20 plots linked to Iran, some involving plans to assassinate or abduct individuals in the UK deemed adversaries of the Iranian regime.

In light of the threats, Iran International temporarily relocated its operations from London to Washington, D.C., last year but returned to a new studio in London the following September, following what the channel described as an increase in “state-backed threats from Iran.”
