WILMINGTON, N.C. — In a well-fought game on Friday night, UNC Wilmington secured a 69-60 victory over Sam Houston, largely driven by Donovan Newby’s impressive performance, scoring 19 points.
Newby demonstrated his shooting prowess by making 6 of 11 attempts from the field, including four three-pointers out of eight attempts, and converting 3 of 5 free throws. His teammates also contributed significantly; Bo Montgomery recorded 17 points on an efficient 6 for 8 shooting, including 3 for 4 from three-point territory, and he also added five rebounds to the tally. Khamari McGriff chipped in with 11 points, finishing 4 of 8 from the field.
The Bearkats, now at a 3-4 record, saw their leading scorer, Lamar Wilkerson, put up 20 points along with four steals. Cameron Huefner and Erik Taylor also made notable contributions, finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Seahawks gained control of the game when they took the lead with 9:39 left in the first half, maintaining that advantage throughout. By halftime, UNC Wilmington was ahead, 33-20, with Montgomery playing a key role in building their lead, scoring nine points before the break.
