CHARLESTON, Ill. — Nakyel Shelton had an impressive performance, scoring 26 points as Eastern Illinois triumphed over Northern Illinois with a score of 72-59 during the DePaul Classic on Friday evening.
Shelton contributed six rebounds for the Panthers, who improved their record to 2-5. Kooper Jacobi also made a significant impact, adding 19 points with an efficient shooting display, going 7 for 12 overall, including 1 for 3 from beyond the arc, and perfect from the charity stripe at 4 of 4. The team collectively secured 16 rebounds as well. Zion Fruster supported the effort with 11 points, hitting 5 of 10 from the field, also making 1 of 3 from three-point land.
On the opposing side, James Dent Jr. was the standout for the Huskies (2-6), contributing 20 points along with nine rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Quentin Jones filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks. Tsvet Sotirov chipped in with nine points for Northern Illinois.
Eastern Illinois gained momentum late in the first half, seizing the lead with 5:24 remaining before halftime and maintaining it until the finish. Jacobi spearheaded the scoring in the first half for the Panthers, netting 10 points to secure a 31-24 lead at halftime. The team continued to build their advantage in the second half, outscoring Northern Illinois by six points, with Shelton leading the charge by scoring 19 points following the break, which ultimately anchored their victory.
