HUNTSVILLE, Texas — In a hard-fought game on Friday, Hunter Watson threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter, leading Sam Houston to a close 20-18 victory over Liberty. This win keeps the Bearkats in the running for a chance to compete in the Conference USA Championship game.

Liberty’s Kaidon Salter made an impressive 33-yard touchdown run to cap off a six-play, 64-yard drive with just 1:10 left on the clock. However, the Flames could not convert the crucial two-point conversion attempt, which allowed Sam Houston to maintain their lead.

For the Bearkats to secure their spot in the championship, they will be relying on Jacksonville State to defeat Western Kentucky in tomorrow’s match. Jacksonville State has already clinched their first title game appearance with a 21-11 victory over Sam Houston earlier this season and will be hosting the championship on December 6. The Hilltoppers, meanwhile, will qualify with a win on Saturday.

During the game, Watson connected for touchdown passes of 17 yards and 2 yards to Simeon Edwards, helping Sam Houston to establish a 17-2 advantage midway through the second quarter. For the game, Watson completed 19 out of 33 attempts, racking up a total of 202 yards.

Adding to the Bearkats’ offensive efforts, Jay Ducker contributed significantly with 96 rushing yards. Kicking duties were handled by Christian Pavon, who successfully made a 39-yard field goal in the first quarter and a 38-yarder during the third quarter.

For Liberty, Salter’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Canion narrowed the score to 17-9 with just 1:14 remaining in the first half. However, Salter finished his night with only 12 completions on 35 attempts, totaling 83 yards while also throwing two interceptions. Quinton Cooley led the Flames’ rushing attack with 90 yards on 19 carries.
