MILWAUKEE — In a dominating performance, David Joplin led the No. 10 Marquette Golden Eagles to a resounding 94-59 victory over Stonehill on Wednesday night. Joplin scored 27 points, showcasing his shooting ability as he connected on his first five attempts, which included three shots from beyond the arc. He finished the night with a remarkable 10 out of 12 shooting percentage. This impressive game followed his career-high 29 points in the previous matchup against Georgia, where Marquette won 80-69 in the Bahamas.
Joining Joplin in the scoring effort were Kam Jones and Damarius Owens, both contributing 14 points each. Notably, Owens, a freshman, had struggled in his first three games, tallying only five points. However, he made a significant impact in this game, successfully landing all three of his 3-point attempts.
On the other side, Amir Nesbitt emerged as the top scorer for Stonehill with 14 points, while Hermann Koffi chipped in with 13 points, and Chas Stinson added 10 points. Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, their leading scorer Josh Morgan, who averaged 15.4 points per game, was sidelined due to a foot injury.
Takeaways from the game reveal that Stonehill, which transitioned to Division I in 2022, continues to struggle with road performances, suffering their 26th consecutive loss away from home. For Marquette, the win improves their record to 7-0, keeping them as one of the only two undefeated teams in the Big East, as No. 22 Xavier and Providence both faced losses in their respective games.
A key moment of the match occurred with 8:53 left in the first half when Stonehill’s Ethan Meuser hit his second consecutive 3-pointer, narrowing the gap to 27-21. However, Marquette quickly responded with a powerful 24-10 run, concluding the first half with a commanding 51-31 lead.
Statistically, Marquette excelled with a shooting percentage of 60.7%, converting 37 of 61 shots, and dominating the paint, where they scored 52 points.
Looking ahead, Marquette will host Western Carolina this coming Saturday, while Stonehill is scheduled to play against Quinnipiac on Sunday.
