GREENBELT, Md. — A Maryland court has found one of the two teenagers charged in connection with an April shooting that injured five youths not guilty.
The defense attorney, Tom Mooney, announced that his 16-year-old client would be released from detention following the verdict.
“Today marks a significant moment where a young man has been acquitted after spending over six months behind bars for a crime he did not commit,” Mooney stated in an email. “Due to legal restrictions, we cannot disclose his name. His identification as a suspect occurred shortly after the incident, which led law enforcement to focus their efforts on building a case against him, leaving other possible suspects and evidence unexplored.”
The incident that led to the charges took place at an unsanctioned senior skip day gathering on April 19 in a Greenbelt park. Following the shooting, two suspects—a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old—were apprehended. Mooney raised concerns that investigators may have placed too much emphasis on implicating his client instead of thoroughly investigating other leads or potential suspects.
“This investigative tunnel vision ultimately resulted in a trial where, upon closely examining the evidence—or the lack thereof—the court ruled in his favor,” Mooney added. “The existence of reasonable doubt was pivotal in the final decision.”
Reports indicate that the other teenager implicated in the shooting is set to face trial in December.
The five injured teens were treated at local hospitals and have since been discharged.
